The GIFLEX elastomer coupling from Chiaravalli consists of two hubs and an elastomer insert which splits hubs. This design ensures damping torsional vibration, thermal and electrical insulation and uninterrupted operation even after damage to the insert. In addition, the flexibility of the insert enables the compensation of installation errors of the combined shafts. The hardness of the insert translates directly into the rated torque of the coupling. The material type of the insert is selected according to the operating conditions of the coupling.
The ability to compensate for shaft misalignment can be extended by using two elastomer inserts separated by a spacer insert. Such a procedure elongates the coupling and doubles its flexibility. The result is a so called double-cardan coupling.
Depending on the type and size of the elastomer couplings are made of steel, plastic and aluminium alloys and cast iron.
